Twelve years ago eight women, led by Susan Klotz, banded together to form Michigan Military Moms. These eight women had sons and daughters serving in the military. With the war approaching they were worried and didn't know where to turn for information or support. These women met to support each other, to gain knowledge of the military experience, and to support their sons and daughters while they were serving. The group now not only focuses on those sons and daughters who are serving but those who need support once their military service ends.
In 2007 President, Maureen VanHooser incorporated the organization and obtained the 501(c)3 non-profit status.
MMM has worked with the VA hospitals in Ann Arbor and Detroit. We purchased a washer and dryer for the Veterans homeless shelter, Lazy Boy recliners for the Ft. Campbell step-down medical facility, sent scrubs to a medical facility in Iraq, mailed pillows, blankets, towels and washcloths, made numerous personalized quilts for injured troops, mailed thousands of packages to service men and women worldwide, and participated in countless other service related projects. We worked with American Legion Post 364, where we have our home, with their annual fund raising event - Hog Heaven - as well as working fund raisers for other veterans.
We can proudly say that we have had over 900 moms walk through the doors of our several chapters.
Most importantly and the reason we were founded, is we have supported each other through good times and bad. We've laughed together and cried together, especially when we lost a daughter and several sons.
May Michigan Military Moms continue to support each other and our currently serving military, as well as our veterans, for many years to come.
Happy 12th Anniversary Michigan Military Moms!
Welcome to the Michigan Military Moms. We are a non-profit 501(c)3 support organization for moms or primary caregivers of children who are currently serving or who have served in the US military. Whether your son or daughter is in a delayed entry program, boot camp, serving state side or in a combat zone, there is someone in our group that has faced the challenges that you are feeling today. Our group supports each other unconditionally in our concerns, fears, and joys during the daily trials we confront.
There are several chapters of the Michigan Military Moms in the Metro-Detroit area. We package quarterly sending boxes to our sons and daughters – and we do special packaging for combat battalions who are in need of specific items. At our meetings we schedule speakers knowledgeable in issues to help educate us in military matters, we host crafting meetings, game nights, hold discussions, invite you to share your questions, concerns, & joys that we experience. We invite all – to come and experience the support that only a Mother in your position can understand! We hope to see you at a meeting soon.
